Tomokawa Kazuki – Runaway Lad (友川かずき・家出青年)

vengeance-bourbon_tomokawa-kazukiDuring the live concert of Tomokawa Kazuki I attended last weekend, one of the songs caught my attention – it was the song Runaway lad (家出青年). He spoke a lot about (against) atomic reactors, and this song carries his ideas.

Listening to this song the first time at the concert, it gave me the shivers, reading the lyrics, the shiver continues, and seems not to end. Music you will not hear on NHK, critical voices are shutting down in this country. We have to learn “to say no” (quote from the song).

Read on for the official translation.

Gone, with the head bending down
Among spring flowers
Gone, with times inanely layered over my shadow
Gone, with the runaway lad’s back clearing up anew

Sinking in be, I thought, “I don’t care”
Kicking the duvet, I thought, “I have to move on”

The irritation of running away with eyes closed
Is all in the bones of the boy on a distant spring day

Kakakakakaka…
Kakakakakaka…

Gone, laying ridiculous pieces of myself
On a snowy road
Gone, in a state soaked in agony one after another
Gone, with the runaway lad’s hope swimming
In a sewage canal towards the sea

Sinking in bed, I thought, “I don’t care”
Kicking the duvet, I thought, “I have to move on”

A red rueful flower falling in a fit of pleasure
But still, those in charge set off a balloon of rage

Kakakakakaka…
Kakakakakaka…

He found himself among boisterous music
He found himself in a dead isolation
Gone, with the runaway lad’s eyelids
Filled with an open mind

Sinking in bed, I thought, “I don’t care”
Kicking the duvet, I thought, “I have to move on”

The irritation of running away with eyes closed
Is all in the bones of the boy on a distant spring day

Kakakakakaka…
Kakakakakaka…

Amid the utmost time
The people are all like kandachime horses
And all like the cold desolate winds

Because you say it’s “for the next generation,”
It only makes it ludicrous
Because you call it “negative legacy,”
It’s kept within bounds

Whether it’s about nuclear power or anything,
If you can’t take it, raise your voice to say no
Colourless refined aesthetics
Is not even close to those chickens’ shit

You, hey you
Once in this country
There used to be a bird with deep blue wings

If “poverty is violence”
Ignorance also is violence
It is a mortifying violence

If “poverty is violence”
Ignorance also is violence
It is a mortifying violence
